Le Lancaster a été sans conteste l'arme offensive de la R.A.F lors de la seconde guerre mondiale. De 1942 à la fin de la guerre, il fut, grâce à sa capacité exceptionnelle d'emport de bombes, un acteur majeur dans les bombardements stratégiques.     Outre la bombe Grand Slam, le Lancaster transportait des bombes dites "à ricochets" de Barnes Wallis. Grâçe à un système de mise en rotation de la bombe, elle fit de gros dégâts, notament lors du raid sur les barrages de la Ruhr en mai 1943.
