It looks to me like maybe the temp was too high...See the discolouration of the whole body. A flecked look to it. What temp did you have?

The best place to buy axolotyls is from a good aquarium shop. They usually have pritty good knowledge to share with first time owners. And the animals are more likey to be healthy as the people who work there have a fair amount of experience.

Experts say that adult axolotyls need a square foot of space each. I don't entirely agree. When I was a kid I had one in an old, large plastic fish bowl. He lived for over 6 years.
But i'm sure they would prefer it rather than something cramped.
