As part of Mortal Kombat Informer's live coverage of the 2008 E3 Media & Business Summit, ShoeUnited caught up with Mortal Kombat series co-creator Ed Boon to chat about Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.
---------------
ShoeUnited: What new things do you expect the fans to get into in this game?
Ed Boon: Really getting into the nuances of the game. They're really gonna realize just how much different it plays and how many cool new depth features they put into that.
SU: What do you think was the hardest to pull into these games, all told? Between having the short notice of DC coming in and everything, what was the most difficult part?
Ed: For this particular game? I think it was a combination of approvals; kinda rewriting the fighting engine; and the new technology like playstation th-- this is our first game with the playstation 3 and xbox 360 and the whole Unreal Engine and stuff. I think it's a combination of those things.
SU: Is there something new that you're not spoiling? How many things are you NOT spoiling yet? Give me a number. Besides characters; there's something in there that you haven't said?
Ed: That we're not spoiling yet?
SU: Yes. Like, there's some things you haven't said.
Ed: That are not in the game?
SU: Besides characters; there's something in there that nobody's expecting?
Ed: We just recently were just talking about this super version ---(*BATTERIES RAN OUT!*)
****As recalled as best as I can: --- of the fatalities. We're not sure if we will go with that, but we are discussing the idea of have a super fatality. ****
SU: So how many things are you thinking of?
Ed: How many things that we haven't announced?
Su: Yeah.
Ed: The entire story mode is kinda starting to announcing things related to that and then really going into how detailed the story mode is. How you fight two different versions, one is from the Mortal Kombat side. You know playing two different characters; and one is from the Mortal Kombat side one on the DC side you play DC characters. It's very exciting to know in a different way of retaining story mode.
SU: Now is that going to be; Alternating? Like you play one guy and then you play another guy the next round or is it going to be you play one guy all the way through on one character?
Ed: No. What is for instance: You play Batman for a while. Like four or five fights in a row as Batman. Then when the chapter is over you may move to The Flash. Then you play as the Flash for a chapter. And that's how story mode is told. It's kinda like, through the eyes of the individual character. And as you're playing a character and controlling his points you learn to master the character.
SU: Little bit sideways question: How do you feel about having so damn many fans? I'm sure in 1989-1990 you couldn't imagine it, but today...
Ed: About the game having so many fans?
SU: About you.
Ed: I'm not sure I have any fans, for me. But the game is pretty cool, 16 years after the fact we're still selling in the millions, and all that. So we're pretty excited about that. I look at the dramatic change we're making this game is going to continue that.
SU: One last off topic question, because I have a whole bunch of questions for you next week. I don't know how often you read the fan boards and all that...
Ed: We read them, yeah.
SU: Have you noticed there's a running gag about your eyebrows?
Ed: Oh yeah. I don't think that's the newest bit of news.
SU: No it's not the newest, we were just wondering if you knew we were obsessed about your eyebrows?
Ed: There was a time there was a thing about my shoes. And there was my eyebrows for a long time. I think there are spaces where these things come and go.
SU: Is there anything you want to spoil? Just tease us?
Ed: I think we have some really info coming. Introducing 4 more characters at Comic-con. Which is exciting. A more finalized version of the game, with more characters. And we're going to have Catwoman and Shang Tsung. And I'm contemplating trying to get one more character Demo Ready for Comic-con.
SU: Is there any chance of Doomsday dropping?
Ed: There's a chance.
*laughter*
SU: There's always a chance. I appreciate very much, sir. I'll be questioning you harder when I have an hour at comic-con next week.
