What is it about the relation of the past that not only intrigues but also brings a new-found sense of purpose for living in the present-day moment? Why is it that the stories of Mrs. Cleo Threadgoode had such a positive impact on Evelyn Couch? I believe the answer to these questions is simple, yet complex.
The sheer fact of acknowledgment reconfirms our status as humans and that we belong to this group of social beings. However, Mrs. Threadgoode would have obviously shared her story with almost anyone sitting within hearing distance. I believe she had such a large impact on Evelyn not because she shared parts of her past, but because she related the past in a way that Evelyn could apply to her present. Even more than this though, I cannot help but note the importance of timing in the communications between the two. Mrs. Threadgoode appeared in Evelyns life in the midst of her period of despair and did not fail to reach out to her and act as an encourager. On the other hand, Evelyn appeared on the scene in Mrs. Threadgoodes life as she was on her way out, making her much more inclined to share this story of her past that so captivated Evelyn. The timing dictated the setting and made the dynamics of their relationship possible. Their relationship exemplifies the opportunistic nature of communication as two people fall into sync, thriving on innumerable nuances that can never be exactly repeated.
