A clip from Thursday night's kickboxing workout at Mullins Martial Arts in Norton. You'll see Aaron Marcum, a mixed martial arts competitor with Team FAST, working various focus mitt and Thai pad drills. Here we have Aaron concentrate on his form as he throws the right thigh kick to the ribs. In past few months, as we prepared for GFC 22 in Pikeville, I decided not to train his Thai round kick at all. I didn't want to introduce any new techniques into his skills set, instead focusing on his boxing and general footwork. This drill is an excellent way to concentrate on form versus power or speed, to get the technique down before you starting banging away at Thai pads, heavy bags, or banana bags.

  • LOL.....WOW you guys SUCK. Stop watching kung fu movies.

  • I haven't watched a kung-fu movie in quite a while. Thanks for your positive comment, jerk wad.

  • hes dropping his right hand! were u at trainer!?!?!?!

  • Yes, he is dropping his right hand as he throws the right mid-level Thai kick. That's done on purpose for two general reasons: (1) to provide a counter balance and (2) to add more power to the kick. He's doing what I am asking him to do. Various coaches will teach this kick in different ways. Some actually teach keeping the right hand either up in a guarded position or straight ahead toward the opponent's face. I have found the particular method shown in this clip to be a better choice.

  • it really depends on what school you train. some kru teach to have both hand up when you throw the kick. and then whip the hand down afte conncecting. but if your dropping the right hand, at least get the shoulder up to cover the chin
