King Mongkut or Phra Bat Somdet Phra Poramenthramaha Mongkut Phra Chom Klao Chao Yu Hua was the fourth King of Siam of the Chakri dynasty. He came to the throne in 1851. Most known in the west for his part in "The King and I" it was King Mongkut who led Siam through a difficult period when neighboring countries on all sides were coming under British or French rule. He began to modernize Siam and was adept at keeping foreign nations at a distance, securing Siamese independence. A forward thinking and highly intelligent monarch his reign was the foundation for great advances to come in the future and he is rightly revered by many in Thailand to this day. He died in 1868 and was succeeded by his son Prince Chulalongkorn.

  • I was killing time in the Library today and found a book called "The Three Emperors: Three Cousins, Three Empires and the Road to World War One " about Willy, Nicky and Georgie. Have you read it? It looked rather good.

  • @lamnaa I don't think I've read that one but I am very familiar with the correspondence between the three prior to the First World War -rather sad; none of them really wanted it but they all ended up getting it. To relate to the vid above, on Nicholas II's first major overseas tour he went to Siam and met with King Chulalongkorn, son of King Mongkut featured here.
