BARACK OBAMA IN MANILA
GMA finally gets call from Obama
BY REGINA BENGCO
PRESIDENT Arroyo finally got her wish to have a phone conversation with US President-elect Barack Obama when the Illinois senator called her up at 3:17 a.m. yesterday (3:17 p.m. Monday in the US).
"The President said the call was more of a reassurance from the President-elect about the continuing good relations and the cooperation that would take place between the Philippines and the US," Press Secretary Jesus Dureza said yesterday.
He said Arroyo earlier tried to reach Obama by calling Washington at about 2 a.m.
Arroyo was in Obamas hometown of Chicago during her visit to the United States for the United Nations conference on interfaith dialogue last week but she was not able to meet Obama.
Dureza said he was not able to get more details from the President about the phone conversation as she was about to get in a helicopter to attend a wake in Laguna.
Dureza said that Obama also called President Mikheil Saakashvili of Georgia and President Abdullah Gul of Turkey to return their congratulatory messages.
Dureza said he does not know if Arroyo felt slighted because she was lumped with the leaders of Georgia and Turkey.

"The Philippines is not only the second most corrupt country in Asia, and one of the top 10 most corrupt countries in the world, as measured by Transparency International, a global corruption watchdog, but also that its president, Gloria Arroyo, is the most corrupt president in Philippine history, as measured in a recent Pulse Asia survey.
