Here is my arrangement of Deep Purple's 'Smoke On The Water'. The purpose of this video is to demo the C1 with the distortion (called Drive on the C1) turned to a maximum.

I also wanted to give a not too difficult arrangement for playing this song on keyboard, with a (simplified) left hand bass line.

----------
The organ is a Clavia Nord C1 - a Hammond B-3 clonewheel organ.
----------
Nord C1 Registrations and Settings:
Upper 88 8000 000. No Chorus. No Percussion.
Lower 00 0000 000. Not used.
Bass lower man. 60.
Leslie in Stop position.
Equalizer Treble 0dB, Mid -5dB, Bass 0dB.
Overdrive turned to maximum.
Reverb Hall, Soft, 50%.
Tonewheel mode Vintage 2 (high level of tonewheel crosstalk and cable leakage artefacts).
The sound is recorded line out from the organ. No additional external effects, external amplifiers or speakers are used.

  • Hi paul

As a matter of fact I happened to stumble upon side A of that John La Duca record not that far ago, and, yes...

    He is/was a brilliant player!

I'm mostly into 'traditional' Jimmy Smith (& legacy), B-3/C-3 88 8000 000, soul jazz myself when I listen to music, which is a bit from what La Duca plays both in technique ('groove' and tone shaping) and 'soundscape', but still, one has to be totally deaf not to appreciate the greatness of La Duca :-)

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • @rounder2u Listen to John La Duca Wurlitzer 4500/4502/4300 for a very good album (posted sides A & B in two vids). John is (was?) an amazing player and could get so much from these organs. All parts and service is available from all of the former Wurlitzer employees who bought Wurlitzer's entire stock when the plant in Mississippi closed and they have parts to last for years to come for over 170 organs and pianos. Prices are awesome! Chassis EZ2remove $40 2 rebild+parts!

    I've learned

  • Hi paul

A Wurlitzer 4500 for free :-) That was a really 'high-end' organ of it's time I believe. And maybe still? I read that it was all solid state as Wurlitzer was early abandoning tubes.

One of my top favourite organ sounds is Jimmy Smith's original '65 trio recording of Organ Grinder's Swing (w Burrell/guit and Tate/dr).

Btw, you seem to have a very deep knowledge of different organs, and most probably of different organ speaker cabinets too :-)

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • @rounder2uThey raised the price after two days at $125 back up to the original $225 and it sold a day later. Great move! I guarantee there were butthead B3/C3 wheeler dealers that tried to grab it for free. God I hate those guys!! I'm not a dealer I'm a player. My ten organs are 5 Wurlitzers, two Thomas, 1 Gulbransen, and two Hammond's. My favorite organ is a Wurlitzer 4500 I got for free. Like TWs the 4500 lacks nothing! It can play it all because of it's in your face tonal abilities.

  • Hi vazon

    Thanks!

Some people seem to like the over-the-top dist, some despise it :-)

I have a hard time taking a fancy to drum machines, but...

I can see that this 'smoke' recording just celebrated it's three years birthday!

I've been tickling those ivories a few hours now and then since that, so, if you are interested, please, check out a later recording of mine, e.g. my 'Cutover Blues' and let me hear if I still got those timing issues you percieve here.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • Nice playing, not a bad tone at all! Just one critique - the timing is a bit wayward. Can I suggest a click track, or a drum machine? Otherwise, keep up the good work.

  • @schepler2 I never thought I would say this ever in my life, but the price isn't an issue ( at $125 LOL) it's the space!

  • @paulj0557 Wait til the price goes down. I got my M-101 for the princely sum of $75. I just waited til the seller got tired of trying to sell it at $125. The organ market is so soft right now that you can pretty much name your own price. If the seller is totally unreasonable or stubborn and won't budge on his price, who cares? Organs are like buses nowadays; another one comes along every ten minutes.
