What are the risks? I've never done it but you make it sound awful dangerous.

well, if you don't have the car in gear then there is no way to speed up if you have to. you can't engine break to slow down so you have to use your breaks. and if the car is in neutral it will start to slow down immediately

well my mom has a 2006 Volvo S40 with the manual and she's been saving money just by coasting and the speed is the same for most of the time, not losing speed. :P

i'm sorry, but coasting and neutral are two different things. neutral is clutch in or gear box with out a gear... once you get up to highway speed, lets say 70, you should simply leave your foot on the gas at a constant rate and never should you put the car in neutral. you will slow down very quickly. and then you will have to rev match to get back into gear which takes time. you should keep a car in gear as much as possible or risk serious accidents.. i get 32 mpg hwy keeping in 6th @ 80mph

ok, well then you shouldn't really talk... you drive a car in low gear (ie. 6th or 5th) on the hwy...the mpg comes from the fact that the revs can be controlled when driving urban. so you can keep your car at efficient revs when ever you want because you're controlling the gears
