This video shows one version of a container garden which I am using to grow some onions. The container garden, or garden-in-a-bucket, is a simple method to grow plants and vegetables when without a traditional in-ground garden, or to simply augment your existing garden. It allows you to mix specific soil and nutrition blends which may be different depending on the types of plants or vegetables that you are growing, and as such will enable you to optimize the growing conditions to produce a higher yield.

  • hey man nice vid, what is the material or net u put at the bottom ?

  • @julipj2004 I use 'landscapers cloth'. It's the stuff they lay down on areas where they don't want weeds to grow through and will then cover it over with wood chips, rocks, etc... It comes in rolls and you can get it at Home Depot, etc..

  • I work for myself and seem to run into multitudes of plastic totes, buckets, containers. Now you have convinced me that I can reuse them, rather than let them waste in a land fill.

  • @sandrajeanification Great idea! I actually just planted a new bucket of onions a few days ago. I'm doing the same with carrots too. One thing though with containers is that you have to stay on top of watering - more so than if they were in the ground.

  • Thanks for video-ing the pup at the end, what a sweetheart! Update on the onions?

  • So, I've managed to nurse about 20 of the seedlings along. For some reason, both times that I planted these seeds, only about half would germinate. I might try a different way next time. When they get a little taller, I'll do a quick video. So far I really like the container method because it gives you better control of their environment.

  • I'll try that with Onions..

  • I have planted in plastic "Rubber Maid" type containers for many years. They work great, are awesome for soil p/h management, and easy to maintain. However constant exposure to UV light will cause the plastic to degrade, so plan on replacing your containers every 3 years or so. Other wise you may have a heap of soil and plastic bits in your yard one morning.

  • Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, dachshund. I wish I had a dachsund with me right now, (walks downstairs) yay I have dachsunds too.

  • COOL DASCHUND!
