Whether youre going to school far away from home or commuting to classes from your parents house every day, you probably have to worry about car insurance. Even if you arent actually paying your insurance premium until you get out of college, you can still save your parents money by finding discount auto insurance just for college students. There are a couple of different ways to go about this. You can either find insurance that is inherently cheap or you can work to get as many discounts on a more expensive policy as you possibly can. If you drive an old jalopy, you can probably get really cheap auto insurance from the get-go, as long as you have a fairly clean driving record. Look for policies that will give you the states minimum mandated coverage. These are called PLDP or personal liability and property damage policies, and they are basically meant to insure other peoples damages if you cause a wreck or have some part of the cause in a wreck. The problem with a PLPD policy is that it wont actually cover your own car. If you cause a wreck that totals your own car, youll be out of luck. You can sometimes count on the other drivers insurance if he causes the wreck, but if that driver is uninsured or underinsured, you may still be unable to replace your car. So, you should only go with a PLPD policy if you can afford to live without a car for a while or if you have a down payment to replace your car in the event that you total it and cant get an insurance payout. Another option is to get a plan with more coverage while finding as many added discounts as possible. Unfortunately, since youre still under twenty-five, your car insurance will be more expensive than that of an adult, especially if youre a guy. However, you can get discounts for all sorts of things. If you get good grades, report them to your insurance company. The longer you stay accident- and ticket-free, the more likely your auto insurance company is to give you additional discounts on your auto insurance rates. Auto insurance companies and states have different rules about out-of-state students. Normally, as long as your primary residence is with your parents, you can get car insurance from your home state. Some companies even offer discounts for students who live out of state but who are insured in state under their parents policies.
