Greg's List: Blue Man Group

What color is your world?  Greg Wayland joined  a group of guys, 5'10" to 6'2", looking  to paint the  world and themselves blue  for the Blue Man Group.
As Geo Poor put it as he waited to audition, "I  figured if not now, when? "
Three New York buddies began the blue phenom two decades ago.  
Now bewildered but inventive bullet-headed men around the globe beguile audiences with their bizarre take on everything from plumbing, to eating.
In Boston, the group has called the Charles Playhouse home for a blue moon. 
"What do you think it takes to be a blue man?" Greg asked Tommy Goddard as he milled around outside the Charles Playhouse, waiting for his chance.
"Oh, I think it takes a lot of passion, a lot of heart," he said.  
"We also look for a fair amount of theatrical experience," said Tascha Van Auken who is the Boston casting coordinator
She oversaw open casting call for new Blue Men this week.
"We see all kinds of people," she said.
"I have a background in music and performance and circus," said Parker Bert who auditioned.
"I live in a yoga center," said Martin Legg.
"Blue men are not of this world, necessarily, but they're not alien," said Blue Man Mike Brown.
He turns blue by night. He's in the Boston cast. He says the Boston show has added good new stuff.




"So anybody who has seen the show should definitely come back," said Brown.




Greg asked him to define a Blue Man.
"For me, a Blue Man is kind of like a heightened human," said Brown.
But why blue?




"Colors like red can be connected with like evil and green can be aliens," said Brown.




Drums are big with Blue Men.




"Because the blue men don't speak, they have to figure out different ways to communicate with people."
Greg got to try out the big drums, which he liked, and the little drums, which he wasn't so good on.
Blue Men catch paint balls in their mouths, one after another then spit out art works.




Greg flunked the art of mouth catching. A tiny water balloon pitched my way by Blue Man Brian Tavener got as close as Greg's chin, but never in his mouth.




The final test during this audition?
"You have to be able to move things with your mind," said Brown.
With a little mechanical help from the "minds" of the house staff, those tubes started spinning for Mike, not for Greg.
