  • whow what an athlete led for 800 meters and an Irish one, two. Where did the tradition of Irish indoor runners go like Coughlan, Flynn, O' Sullivan and runners like O'Mara, and O'Donavan they were the Golden days of Irish indoor athletics. I suppose the smame could be said of The Britsih 800m and 1500m outdoor athletes. Is it because the Africans (Morrocons, Kenyans and Etheopians have taken over that mantle ?

There has been the odd athlete through like Sonia O' Sullivan and C. Mc Kiernan

  • @niall29 he was always outclassed by Walker, Coe and Ovett outdoors. He didn't have the pure speed over the last 300m. Still one of the greats though and even ran sub 4:00 at the age of 40!!!

  • @dean2663 He was unlucky with injuries but won the world outdoors in 83, and naivety and not talent prevented 2 serious assaults on olympic gold.

  • @hoyamike Ok, you've had 4 years.....

  • great days for ireland..thanks eamonn

  • Coughlan was dominant indoors, but not outdoors. They called him Chairman of the Boards for all his wins in Madison Square Gardens on the small wooden indoor track.

  • Q What do 7 white guys do in a mile race?

    A Chase the black dude.

  • Never seen any of his indoor races. I still remember watching the 5,000 metres World championship in Helsinki in 83 as a kid. Watched it in the Blue lion pub on Parnell street in Dublin with my father. Galway were playing Donegal in the All- Ireland football semi final the same day. Galway won, only to get bet by Dublin's dirty dozen team a few weeks later in the final.
