"I feel physically ill missing her so much. I would have to say I cry all the time now, I miss her so much." - Treasure Grant
Alexis Grant
Alexis Grant was born in March 2004 to her parents Treasure Grant and Michael Leavey and her sister Shayla in Alberta.
Treasure and Michael separated in January 2005.
Treasure took in a boarder named David Hersey. He had recently separated from his spouse also. They soon fell in love.
May 18th, 2005
Treasure had to leave for work, and Shayla to school. Having a broke down car and already having missed the bus Treasure asked David to take Alexis to daycare.
When asked to bring her to daycare, David told Treasure "I just think I will keep her home."
David was left to baby-sit Alexis on his own. He had watched Alexis before.
Around 9:00 a.m.
Alexis became upset and fussy annoying David.
He said he tried juice, cartoon, toys and sitting with her to try and calm little Alexis down.
When nothing appeared to quiet her down, David just got angrier and threw a toy camera at Alexis while she was in her crib.
Treasure called David once she arrived at work to see if everything was alright, David told her Alexis had fallen down stairs.
She could hear Alexis whimpering and told David to apply some ice.
"And that pushed me over the edge, even more...I just lost it...She just wouldn't stop crying."
David then took Alexis and placed her between the crib and a toy box.
"And I just pinned her between the two."
Alexis screamed louder, very irritated, David screamed back at her.
He dropped Alexis back in her crib, and threw a toy, hitting her face.
Treasure called to check in once again: "He said she looked like she had been hit by a truck and said she must have hit his shoe on the way down. He said she was acting funny."
David picked Alexis up, and violently threw her against a couch.
As Alexis began to fall from the couch, David then wheeled a coffee table at her.
The table hit her in the stomach, clutching her against the couch.
Alexis fell face first onto the table. Then fell onto the floor. Silently.
Treasure called to see if Alexis was doing better "He said she had fallen off the couch. He said she is acting like she is choking. He said he was going to get some water and splash her face."
Around 2:41 p.m.
David went to the bathroom. When he returned Alexis had not moved. He called 911.
Treasure tried calling but the line was busy.
He told paramedics she was having trouble breathing after she had fallen down stairs.
Treasure called again. "I'm not sure if he said she had quit breathing or had difficulty breathing. I heard him say to the firemen Treasure is on the phone. They said they would talk to me later."
When she arrived at Stollery Children's Hospital Alexis was already in a coma. She went in for emergency brain surgery.
"This was not a trivial amount of trauma, this was a massive amount of trauma...This was a catastrophical fatal injury...It would have taken a massive amount of force." - Dr. Melanie Lewis
The next morning Alexis was pronounced brain dead and taken off life support.
Alexis Grant went to heaven.
Police knew the injuries were conflicting with the story of Alexis falling down stairs.
The autopsy revealed Alexis cause of death to be blunt cranial trauma. Alexis' body had swelling on the back of her head and" evidence of multiple blows"
"There were multiple opportunities for him to stop, leave, get help." - Crown prosecutor Shelley Bykewich
David was arrested and charged with second degree murder.
The charge was downgraded to manslaughter and David was charged with four years and eight months in prison.
"I don't think it was long enough. Like, the way I look at it he's basically -- 4 and a half years of our tax paying dollars gets to support him for the next while...And my daughter didn't even get to live that long." - Treasure
But Treasure forgave David.
"For myself and the year and a half therapy I have gone through, I have forgiven him due to the fact there is no way I could hang onto that much anger,"
Michel Leavey however did not feel the same.
"(Alexis' death)left a hole in my heart...I don't think he should be let out of jail ever."

"I will never be the same. I feel part of me left with her. Unless you have that bond with a child, you'll never know." - Treasure Grant
Treasure, you are no treasure. If someone murdered my baby, God may be able to forgive them, but I wouldn't.

I've heard of people "forgiving" murderers so that they don't feel so angry. Then people are all like, "Oh, you're so strong to forgive!" I do not agree. Once a murderer - always a murderer.
