First airing on Saturday, January 27, 2007, this TalkAsia interview with Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian showed his and the people of Taiwan's side of a story which is usually covered by the international media from Beijing's perspective.

President Chen spoke in Mandarin throughout (think the pan-blues will applaud him for it?), and you can hear a good bit of the original audio if you listen carefully, but there is a voice throughout giving a mostly-accurate English-language translation.

Who are the real "troublemakers"? Both China and the pan-blue opposition in Taiwan who have clearly ruled out giving the people of Taiwan a say in their own future.

  • This hostess got a conclusion: Taiwan is a country,and hopefully she'll have a chance to interview Taiwan UN representative soon.....

  • Loller, you'd better find some new books and sites written by someone other than the PRC's Ministry of Propaganda.

    Read this slowly and carefully:

    * * *

    The PRC flag has never flown over Taiwan.

    * * *

    Face that fact.

  • Lol sorried all my books and sites did mention taiwanese origining from china and taiwan was part of china. I know you are very patriotic, but please face the fact, all your fellow taiwan tell you taiwan s itself because thats propaganda. Please what your parents say are not always right.

  • "[F]rom [T]aiwan"? No. In Taiwan? Yes.

    "[B]rainwashed"? I think for myself, thank you.

    "[P]ointless to argue with [me]"? With the kind of "logic" you're using, absolutely!

  • Which planet are you on, "deadpeng"? Chiang Kai-shek's goal was to "retake the mainland" and to "unify China." The DPP wants Taiwan's independence to be recognized. It has *never* been part of the PRC. Read my words carefully. Come back when you've done some research.

  • Oh i just realized you are from taiwan, so you are brainwashed already. pointless to argue with you.

  • Taiwan has never been part of China?Lol it had been part of China until Jiang Jie Shi wanted indepence so that he can carry out his own rules because he could not become the ruler of china but mao zhe dong rejected.Until today taiwan still doesnt give up because ofd the legacy he left behind zzzzz

  • The difference with Taiwan, "deadpeng" (?) from "Benin" (?), is that New York is part of the US (which is why there's probably no "anti-secession" law or "NY independence" movement), while Taiwan has never been part of the PRC. Oh, and the other states of the US aren't pointing missiles at NY.

  • Talking about the fight for independence may sound like liberty, but just imagine if one day New York says we want to detach from USA
