In one of Russia's most popular TV shows, hundreds of thousands have been voting to find the greatest Russian in history.

One of the top candidates is Josef Stalin.

Stalin is accused of being behind the killing of millions of his own people but as he transformed the country into one of the most powerful in the world, many Russians still regard him as a hero.

Al Jazeera's Alan Fisher reports from Moscow.

@Go4everGoran Stalin never killed his own people. Check demography of USSR under Stalin's reign. During Stalin era Russian demography saw the greatest population growth in history of Russia. That's how good Stalin was. Stalin is the best leader of Russia in history. And he is hated in the West because he is so good and done a lot of good things to Russia and Russian people. West hates strong Russia. West needs weak and retarded Russia with Gorbachev or Yeltzin as presidents. Stalin is hero.
