Just a little video detailing a few options for storing/separating your gear. Apologies if the terminology is confusing sometimes.

- Stuff Sack: Just a Nylon bag with a drawstring closure. Great for storing wet/dirty items since the material does not allow moisture to pass. This is the cheapest option if you don't care about the closure.

- Compression Sack (Ziplock-type): Basically a plastic sleeve with a Ziplock-type closure. You put bulky items like clothing inside, seal it, and then roll the bag to force air out of the bag. It saves you some space and is waterproof. Best used for items you want to keep flat.

- Compression Sack/Bag: Same as a stuff sack but with a lid that is attached to the bag with compression straps. Allows you compact your items. Often offered with higher end sleeping bags instead of stuff sacks.

- Dry Bags: Like a stuff sack but with a special closure that you roll up and then seal with a clasp. It doesn't compact quite as well as a compression bag but you have the benefit off it being truly waterproof.

  • The reason why those walmart dry bags are so cheap is because, well they are cheap. Mine leaked after 2 trips. I've used my NRS dry bag for years kayaking and it hasn't leaked yet.

  • Great ideas. I'd advise dry sacs because they will keep everything dry if u are going canoeing, and the are great for everything from clothing to sleeping mats!

  • Wow i gatta pick up that three pack at Wallmart. A large and medium Sea to Summit cost me 60 bucks at EMS.

  • I have the thin Sealine nylon ones that look like the walmart ones, but they actualy work. I roll one of the 10liter ones up inside my cook kit and use it for hauling water. What I would really like though would be a Dry sack like the baja bag (heavier sealine model) that has compression straps on it (the normal ones not the telecompressor like in this video) would be nice to have the best of both worlds.

  • the walmart bags dont say waterproof just water resistant there two different things really ^_^

  • What degree is your bag?

  • Hi, is there a certain size of compression sack that you recommend for a sleeping bag to make it as small as possible to put in a backpack? My backpack is very similar to yours in the vid.

  • @tallmanbrad91 any type of hunting store: cabelas, sportsmans If you are unfamiliar with those or don't have any close try a local sporting goods store. They should have them
