Oct 17 is marked around the world as International Day for the Eradication of Poverty including being recognized by the United Nations. The Poverty Action for Change Coalition (PACC) along with Make Poverty History York Region chapter and community partners have grown the local event from a milk box to a mobile stage with no end in sight.
Fairy Lake Park in Newmarket Ontario Canada has been home to York Region's annual event 4 of the past 5 years with 2010 adding a feature to encourage new performance / art that draw attention to the plight of those in poverty.
Performers were encouraged from all walks of genres to create original works that draw attention to poverty and those marginalized by low income issues. The event lends itself well to housing pathside buskers, singers, performers, and the like. The mainstage performers mostly played original pieces depicting poverty or income related issues...the rally type event fosters encouragement of original music or performances or art allowing the message to live beyond the day while providing a vehicle to play / show original works!
