GARY LUCAS: PART 7 LIVE IN ST. PETERSBURG; SKIF FESTIVAL, 4/25/04
On April 25th 2004, Gary Lucas, "one of the best and most original guitarists in America" (Rolling Stone) performed solo at the 6th Annual Sergey Kuryokhin International Festival of the Arts in St. Petersburg, his fourth trip to Russia. Gary took the stage at 1am after an introduction by his friend noted avant-guitarist Henry Kaiser, and proceeded to play his heart out, as documented here by local fan Nick Kuznetsov. This set stands as one of Gary's finest solo guitar perfomances ever, with the 3 customary Lucas road guitars ('66 Fender Strat, '46 Gibson J-45, and '28 National steel) in full effect.
Here Gary whips out his '66 Strat for a wild shrieking ride through
uncharted territories in the second half of his instrumental
rendition of his song "One Man's Meat". Ever the democrat, he takes
an audience show of hands vote to determine which guitar of the 3
onstage with he will utilize for his encore. Acoustic guitar wins the
day as Gary launches into his tour de force instrumental "Level the
Playing Field" from his album "Street of Lost Brothers"--a medley
that segues into "Amazing Grace" (see part 8)...
