Although Ms. Berry won for Best Actress, it's important to remember Hattie McDaniel's win for Best Supporting Actress in 1939's Gone With the Wind - the first for a Black performer. Although controversial due to the "Mammy" role Ms. McDaniel played, her performance has depths of nuance far beyond the obvious stereotypes visible on the surface. She deserved that award for her acting.
