Barack Obama has admitted his administration will miss a self-imposed deadline to close the US prison at Guantanamo Bay by January.
The US president also said the timeline for closing it will depend on co-operation from congress.
And while he still hopes the prison will be shut down some time in 2010, he has not set a new deadline.
Al Jazeera's senior Washington correspondent Rob Reynolds reports.

Obama seems to be playing by the rules, and getting his knees kicked out from under him.
Unlike Bush who didn't seem to be bothered by the legal process, bypassing congress and the senate in making his own laws, secret signing statements, declaring war (a declaration only afforded to congress as per the Constitution) condoning the actions of the VP, and thwarting an investigation into attempted manslaughter charges, pardoning himself of crimes past and present, etc...
Obama should be so bold.

Military tribunals are for officers and enlisted personnel of an established uniformed army.
The Gitmo detainees are not there for proposed war crimes, they are suspected of crimes against humanity. They are entitled to a fair trial, where they can offer a defense. It's hypocritical to render guilt and punishment without proof, for a country that promotes democracy.
I'm confident in this country's ability to handle dangerous criminals.

Another broken promise. What next? The war will actually be endless like Bush/Cheney said?
