Doesn't your iPhone 3G find your SIM-card? Does it say "No SIM" on the display? The problem may be that the SIM-reader is broken. Open your iPhone and see if the SIM-reader looks fine. One of the 6 pins was missing on mine, which you can see in the video. To fix it you need to buy a new SIM-reader, costs about $2-15 depending on where you buy it from. You also need a soldering station. In this video I show you how we fixed my phone by desoldering the broken SIM-reader and soldering a new one to the motherboard.
