I have had this cocoon in my garage all winter. Yesterday I noticed he was moving. At times he is like a jumping bean and when you pick him up it feels like there is a marble inside. He will jump around like this for a while and then he'll be real still for a long while. I think he takes a nap. ;)

  • I live in Virginia near Washington DC. I had this cocoon in my garage (so that it could experience the weather) from October until April. They overwinter in their cocoons and then come out in the spring. If you keep it inside it may not know what season it is. If you live in the south they may not overwinter. Be patient, I thought mine was dead but it wasn't. I hope you have it in a butterfly house. Don't worry about food, theadult moths don't eat. they live an unfortunatley short time as well.

  • we have a class pet and we believe its a luna. it does the same thing! it feels like a marble inside and then it will wiggle for a while. but it wont hatch and its been like a month! thers a hole in it because the guy who braught it in make a hole, who knows why. so you can see it through the hole cuz he taped it and we took of the tape so you can see it in there a little. its a large hole though

  • @AnimalLoverGirlCutie see my latest post and the slide show I just uploaded

  • @VikingDesigns umm what about it?? and its a luna not a polyphemus. its cocoon is nothing like that. sooooooo why did you want me to see it?

  • @AnimalLoverGirlCutie Um, Gee - just thought you might enjoy it.

  • So cute & funny ! Did he emerge and grow out his wings after this? Flew away? :D

  • @rhapsodyblue56 yes but it actually was a polythemus moth about 6" across and with a body the size of a small cigar. Just amazing!

  • @VikingDesigns nonono i am not trying to be mean sorry but i was just whondering that maybe... you had a reason for me to watch it?? i dunno sorry if i sounded rude

  • @VikingDesigns o our class one probly knows its winter (he/she must be smart!) and thats why it wont hatch. we all thought it was dead till i shook it and i felt it like a marble and then it would wiggle when i put it down.

  • @VikingDesigns Polythemus? not a luna moth? If you have any pitures after emargence, could you post them?

A caterpiller of swallowtail I got last month failed to eclosion. Both of his wings didn't grow at all, he couldn't even stand by himself and died few days after. So sad... :'(
