This is a segment from the CCTV programs News Weekly on May 15th. I think it has one of the more in depth and summery look the recent string of suicides at the Foxconn facility in Shenzhen that's making headlines in China.

  • "Wages on the other hands need to obey supply and demand"

So people should get higher wages if they demand it?

It's not like Foxconn would make no profit if wages would be higher.

  • @rspawn

also realize that most jobs in China are bonus driven instead of salary driven even in low level jobs. For example, one job I accepted in China have a end-of-year bonus that equivalent to 6 month of salary, however it is performance based. Which adds to a lot of pressure in day to day work.

  • @xingfenzhen so you tell us that you are work like iron tool, and hope by end year that you will win jackpot? jeez I would rather go to casino for 10min to see I'm winning or not, if I'm lost, least I still have another 11month to spend.

This sort of pay scheme is more common than you think. A job I worked in US installing base stations. Pays $850 for 2 week period (extremely low for engineer job) but give $1500 if you could finish the monthly quota. However to finish that quota you'll basically have work 12+ hours day including weekends, and that's with no overtime pay during it been a salary position. lucky I "quit" that job, when it is apparent falling off of building is a distinct possibility.

  • due to walking on roofs of some 30+ story building during mid-night after 12 hours of work.... However there still guys stuck in that position and can't afford to wait for a better job... make you appropriate your cellphone reception doesn't it?

  • btw, if you consistently miss the quota, they'll just fire you

  • dont buy Xbox's and apple products and at least LIMIT your Chinese buying. Sennheiser are made in Ireland and Germany , try and go for products that arent Apple aor Xbox related. At least that will help.

  • sounds like the workers there need to start planning how they are going to unionize, strike and ensure no one lines up for a job until they get some ethical work rules and standards.

  • neta ... no entiendo

  • Workers in china desperately need unions!

  • @xingfenzhen Wish I could travel to china to work there and encourage the workers. my hopes and dreams for people working at Foxconn and china making goods for US workers, dreams of happy productive lives and family. SOmething also not easy to find in the US these days as the world changes.

  • The news team did an excellent job of addressing the problems and the solutions.

  • @coruptmonk It is a case of reality vs morality IMO.

  • simple..put railings and bars around the balconies so when they walk out on the balcony they cant jump off, the bars keeps them in. Heck they're already in prison so why tha fuck not? CHINA itself is a fuckin prison. you think this shit happens here at this factory only? fuck it happens all over this god forsaken country DAILY! my damaged chinese ex gf is at wanli uni. for the time she has been there, there has been suicides and suicides attempts even there. CHINA IS A FUCKIN PRISON.

  • The average suicide rate in China is 13.5 per 100,000 people. FoxConn Shenzhen alone employs over 300k people. It can be expected that 36 people a year are going to kill themselves at the factory alone. It's not a coincidence that they're all choosing to jump. If everyone was taking drug overdoses, then that would be the problem. Unless FoxConn is drugging their employees to improve their concentration and reduce fatigue then they're not responsible. Factory work sucks, and they cant deal.

  • if the laws are upgraded, sure, there will be less suicides; but then the prices of manufacturing in china will increase. The western companies who decide to manufacture their because of cost savings will leave and chinas economy will fall.
