Yah, I agree that it's a valid statement. But it's validity is only based on the fact that it's probably somewhat true. He's making an assumption on the mindset of those who were murdered. He doesn't give an example of any other reason for the murders; only, "ignorance and arrogance."
I understand that you think I misunderstand. I think I see where you're coming from. Maybe you can see where I'm coming from.
Either way this debate has gone on long enough for me.
"Foreigners didn't just bring new technology. They also brought their own lifestyles, their own values, and their own beliefs. Invariably, there was conflict between western egalitarian values and the strict hierarchy of Japanese society. SOME OF THOSE who are buried here are those who through ignorance and/or arrogance paid the ultimate price due to these differences."
He aligns the murder of SOME westerners here with ignorance and/or arrogance. I think that is a valid statement.
Well I did say that I was making an assumption; I didn't say that everybody there was a missionary
He says that foreigners brought (along with new technology) their own lifestyles, values and beliefs (shot of Jesus at that moment). It is here where he comments on conflict between western egalitarianism and japanese hierarchical values. He aligns the murder of westerners here with only two things, "their own ingnorance, and/or arrogance." So it's their fault someone else killed them?! imowrong
1. Christians (and other missionaries) were not the only foreigners in Japan.
2. "SOME OF THOSE who are buried here are those who through ignorance and/or arrogance paid the ultimate price due to these differences." You jumped the gun and stuck a foot in your mouth by making a ton of assumptions about who is actually buried there.
Next time, try listening to what the man has to say more carefully before foolishly attacking him.
"Due to ignorance and/or arrogance, paid the ultimate price." This comment on (I would assume) Christians being murdered is short sighted and insulting imo.
Did the narrator ever think that these people might have actually believed in what motivated the cause of their deaths? That belief being that Jesus died for the sins of those that saw fit to take their lives. What a foolish comment embedded in a great podcast.

I realize this is an older post, but:
