The Holstein Association's revised final score assignment procedures for cow classification is explained and demonstrated. The director of type evaluations for the Holstein Association defines each major factor as he assigns factor scores and final scores. The biological range (1-50) is defined for all 15 linear traits by using a ruler and specific anatomical locations on the cow. To show how the concepts are used during competitions, each trait is discussed and scored for four widely varying Holstein cows. Graphics, expertise of the instructor and variation among cows combine to produce an outstanding instructional videotape.
