Fascism was born in Italy (Catholic), spread to Spain (Catholic), reached it's zenith in Germany under Hitler (Catholic).

After the war, the Vatican helped Nazis to escape to Central and South America.

The church has ALWAYS put it's own interests and power before those of normal people. They constantly side with dictators over the people that they oppress.

Cornwell has retracted some of what he said in the book. My impression is that the Catholic Church's actions during this period were mixed. Pius XI did condemn the Nazi ideology, and Pius XII himself was apparently involved in saving some Jews who lived in Rome. On the other hand there were many bishops in Croatia who were apparently involved in a mini-Holocaust of Orthodox Christians.Other bishops helped smuggle Nazis to Brazil.

Church history prior to the 19th century is the real horror show.
