As Draper searches for food, water and oxygen, he eventually discovers that the dead planet may actually harbor life -- but it's not clear whether the Martians are friends or foes.

Now why did they abandon ship? The ship keeps orbiting Mars for days or weeks, before Draper destroys it by radio signal.

I can excuse the lack of scientific perfection in this movie. Even though we know a lot more about Mars now, you could set this movie in a "Red Planet" setting where man has already sent automated vehicles to Mars and started the terraforming process. It's a fun movie!
