From KETC, LIVING ST. LOUIS Producer Anne-Marie Berger speaks with several World War II veterans who fought in the battle of Iwo Jima. While the image of the flag being raised has perhaps become one of the most iconic of all time, inspiring books, television specials and even movies, the heroics of American troops takes on new meaning when told firsthand. Living St. Louis tells the local story of the Iwo Jima battle through the eyes of St. Louis veterans who were there and survived. "Throughout the Your Stories project I've met so many St. Louis veterans with vivid recollections of this battle," Berger says. "They represent living history. Together, their firsthand accounts can paint a more vivid and accurate picture than any textbook."

  • I had the pleasue to work for Charlie and he is quite the character. I heard a lot about his battles through letters he would have me type to various people. Charlie would tell of experiences from the time he was in boot camp right until he was recovering from wounds from Iwo Jima. Charlie Kohler is such a generous person I am so blessed to have worked with him and to know him. Thank you Charlie for all that you do and have done. Semper Fi, Charlie
