If you have insomnia, this video will put you right to sleep :P This is the first time I've flown a VOR approach by using a DME arc. It will take some practice before I can do it well, but I certainly like it better than having to do the usual procedure turn method. This approach required an 8 mile radius from the VOR. I forgot to get a screen shot of the flight analysis, but my "arc" looked more like a stop sign with damaged edges LOL. I also screwed up the turn in for final and had another rough landing. The MAP point was 2.9NM after crossing over the VOR at 1220 ft MSL, but visibility was slightly better than minimums. I flew this as a coupled approach, mainly using the auto pilot to hold altitude so I could keep my mind on flying the arc. I used NAV hold for a bit on the final approach as well.

I don't know how well the quality of this upload will be, but the panel should be fairly readable. Check the annotations to see what's happening. The aircraft is a Cessna 172 "Nav trainer" and is equipped with a special panel. The panel has digital displays above each instrument since the stock instruments are lacking in display quality.

  • good video but with voice would be better thanks

  • @liberguty There's not much to say, really. Thanks for watching.

  • All good! I like that you gave yourself crappy weather to do it in too. What was the airport?

I know they're still used, but DME arcs feel very old school. Good on you for practicing it.

  • I like to practice with poor visibility because it's just not fun when you can see where you want to go :) I'll send you a PM about the airport.
