One of the many joys of being with Dad during his last few weeks of life......This was recorded on November 15th 2009 exactly one week before our wonderful Dad died of lung cancer. He wanted my brother-in-law Michael to learn this song and record him so he could sing it at his own memorial service. He was always a great singer and loved performing. He was barely able to sing anymore but he was determined and said "Once a ham always a ham!" He never lost his sense of humor or sweet smile.

  • Was listening to NPR about a dear friend of mine, Chantay, when I heard this story as well. What a great way to end the year by remembering the wonderful people like Ken and the joy they brought to this world.

  • Thanks for telling us about this on NPR this afternoon. Now I feel like I'd better get busy and get some video of my dad playing his guitar. He plays in a "String Band" that is made up of folks who took lessons from the same teacher in the 1930s. They play with such joy, much like your dad sang here. I'm sorry for your loss.

  • this made me cry. It touches a side of my heart.

  • Hi Dave,

Thanks for your nice comments on the video of my Dad, but I think you have the wrong Ken Harris. Hopefully the Ken you knew is still alive and well. My Dad lived his life in Marin County, California, and he really only performed locally with his Barbershop quartet. As far as I know he didn't have the chance to perform when he visited England. I still agree though that his talent, quality and humor will certainly live on forever!

  • I had no idea that Ken had died, and I'm really sorry. To counter that, very few people had as much impact on the British country music scene, and although he's gone his talent, quality & humour will live on forever. I knew him right from Patsy Powell days at the Nags Head in Corby on a Thursday night, and gawped in awe at his talent. I'll miss you Ken.

  • How touching was this?

  • its so amazing to see this man's eye's sparkle with the joy of singing this song with his kids. so life affirming and human and beautiful.

thanks for sharing this loving, beautiful 3minutes with us.

  • Great fun and touching too! Scrolling lyrics would've made it perfect. His personality shows through.

  • Simply Awesome! Thanks for sharing this gift with the rest of us . .
