In his sermon on January 11, 2009, pastor Greg Boyd questions a Christian tradition in which those destined for Hell will suffer torture and punishment throughout eternity. Boyd believes another early Church tradition teaching on Hell, though not as commonly accepted, is solidly backed by Scripture. Part 3 of 3. The full sermon can be viewed or heard at: http://www.whchurch.org/content/page_910.htm. Greg Boyd recommends The Conditionalist Faith of Our Fathers by LeRoy Edwin Froom for additional reading.

  • 6:05- "Inviting MISERY now....and later." REALLY? Do you mean that being unconscious is to be in "Misery?" LOL The guys wants it both ways!

  • @tainorebelde1 I think Greg is referring to the final judgment. Believing the un-saved will be extinguished and no longer held in existence by God doesn't mean that the final extinguishing act won't be one of miserable (though final) experience.

  • THAT IS EXACTLY THE POINT! The horror of "Eternal Destruction..." A DESTRUCTION THAT NEVER ENDS....where the "Worm does not die."

  • @tainorebelde1 Cool... you made it through part 3!

  • @tainorebelde1 Now go check out: "Greg Boyd: Constantine's Pagan Influence on Christianity."

  • My take on this whole thing is what I think the bible has tried to do from cover to cover.

What does that say about God? Any doctrine you can think of, what kind of light does it shed on God?

Eternal hell is the most abhorrently evil doctrine ever concocted by humanity, but like Boyd and SO MANY other eloquently portray, God is not a person that says, "You either love me or I'll kill ya."

"In fact, I won't just kill ya, but torture you beyond comprehension for all eternity."

    Makes no sense.

  • The 'traditional view' had almost destroyed my relationship with God.

I am so grateful to God that it was His Will that I be told the truth - His Truth - regarding the ultimate fate of those who are unsaved. I could never truly share my love of God with others until I knew that truth. All anyone had to ask me was, "How could a loving God allow anyone to be tormented in Hell forever?" , and I'd have to try change the topic.

  • @Montgomery7674 he explained everything you ask in parts 1 and 2. Go watch parts 1 and 2.

  • @pkart7 Well We Christians want to go to heaven but more than anything we want to see Jesus. It was never God's intention for people to follow him because of fear, that's why he gives us the option to follow him. I love Jesus cause he changed my life . I don't follow him because I'm afraid of hell... love is more important than fear!! I'm glad that you are doing great things for your community!! keep it up!!

  • @Arkad412 " Why else would God go through so much trouble for us if there was no lasting consequence of rejecting him" More than Saving us from hell, his main purpose was to re conciliate us with him and make us his. God wanted people to worship for who he is that's why he came for us. He came to show us his love. Those who will be destroyed are those who want no part with God. You think God would be so evil to send those people to hell for eternity?

  • this is new to me, But it seems that our soul is eternal and that hell is eternal separation from God. Why else would God go through so much trouble for us if there was no lasting consequence of rejecting him?

Another issue is saying that God holds us into existence.Besides being scary close to attributing evil to God it assumes that God cant make a creation in 6 days and rest on the 7. I dont think God has to continual intervene for us to exist.

The last issue is the rich man wasnt in heaven

  • No wander the christianity is so bad up there, men no longer have the fear of hell to drive them to minister to sinner.whats the point of ministering to sinners if punishment is not everlasting.

  • BEAUTIFULLY SPOKEN! AND DEAD ON ACCURATE! It was so great to hear this truth! God DOES NOT SPEAK like men do, He is very POETIC, DEEP, HE SPEAKS THROUGH HIS SPIRIT, HIS THOUGHTS ARE SPIRITUAL, NOT MATERIAL and on the SURFACE! I'm researching this subject, by finding EVERY SINGLE VERSE that speaks about Hades, the pit, outer darkness, lake of fire, 'Hell', and writing them down, AND then finding the earliest, most accurate GREEK scripture verses- and the chosen definitions for every word- in e

  • Boyd's view of hell gets pretty close to the Eastern Orthodox position, which means at once that the claims by Piper et al that Boyd does not represent historic Christianity is just baseless.

  • Great three part series, I linked it to my site...
