The Next Great Mission

This is the story of NASA and how our space program represents the best of the American character...how our nation carries the burden of leadership, and how our space program has defined our role on the world stage and even more importantly, it is a challenge to a nation deeply enmeshed in todays critical issues, to press on towards The Next Great Mission.

In the more than 50 years since Americas first venture into space, we as a nation have celebrated the achievements and mourned the losses of NASA - the preeminent space organization in the world.

And while there have been many accomplishments, the real benefit of space exploration lies not only in the innovations we can touch, but in the ideas and inspirations we can discover - the child who now believes he can do the impossible - the pride we feel as a nation in seeing our astronauts in space - the character we have exhibited when great ships have fallen - and the reminder that even in times of division and trial, we are still one nation under God. NASA has at times been all there was to bind us together, and at times it has given us the push we needed to look beyond our own limitations to accomplish great things.

And as NASA sets its sights on future missions even more majestic than the past, it will continue to inspire new generations of Americans, who, like men and women throughout history, will look into the star filled sky with wonder and hope, pride...and dreams.
