I lived in Wales for one year (in 93/94) and I did love this film even if I found it tragic indeed as it talked about the victory of stupidity and nastiness over poetical spirit.
This scene reminds me that in France, at the same time, many French soldiers didn't speak French (they actually spoke Breton, Basque or Occitan) and they were considered as cattle just like the Welsh (and very probably the Irish and Scottish people...) by the English Army...
