If you spend $100 one month and the next month you spend $75 obviously there's a drop. Unfortunately for your argument, that same $75 is higher than what it was at the same time the year prior.

As long as a business makes more money one year (inflation adjusted) versus previous years, it doesn't matter what the population increase is.
