The 2009 National Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) Awareness Month: Stop the Sickle Cycle Campaign, presented by Streetlight at Shands, is a local effort to increase awareness, support, and understanding of SCD. This campaign is a student-led initiative to encourage all individuals to reflect on the children and the adults whose lives, education and careers are affected by this disease every day. Prevention starts with you. Together we CAN Stop the Sickle Cycle!

  • I really dislike this campaign/propaganda that's going around talking about the "prevention" of SCD! SCD is not like HIV/AIDS or some type of cancer. Safe sex won't stop it & you shouldn't have to worry about who you fall in love with. The focus needs to be on improving treatment & finding a cure, not telling people to be careful who they fall in love with, which is essentially what's being said. Money & efforts need to be re-focused. We need to stop being lazy about this!!

  • @dharmgirl to prevent sickle cell disease...first if you are a carrier of the trait, you should before having kids do a karyotype of your partners chromosomes. Karyotype is the type ot test that says what is genotype is. Wether you or him are heterozygous or homozygous for certain traits.

  • how do you prevent sickle cell disease?
