I was viewing photos on the PS3 using the Portrait slideshow mode when I noticed something rather interesting. I knew that in this slideshow mode, images zoom in and out slowly, using Ken Burns effect. But I did not know that the region of the photo that is zoomed into is determined using some sort of face detection algorithm.

I decided to test myself whether any face detection was being done. Here are the results using some test images I downloaded from the Internet.

Notice how in almost all the cases, the PS3 correctly recognizes the faces in the image and either:

1. Starts zoomed out and ends zooming into the face
2. Starts zoomed into a face, and then zooms out
3. Pans across the image covering all the faces.

  • I'd say the more interesting point in your vid is your un-natural infatuation with Linsay Lohan and George Bush? The PS3 is following a simple algorythm - that is - zoom to a pre-defined color spectrum. You would most likely find if you do the same thing with a nature shot it will zoom to (or from) the lightest part of the picture.

  • I tried many pictures, sdlxanax. For nature images, there is no significant zooming/panning.

  • What is the title of the background music?

  • Its the theme music of 'The Saint'.

  • wow, you have sth for bush huh?

  • I think it is not really face detection.... but if it is then i must say its really amazing..... because most of the common face detection algorothims are able to spot a face if its is in a full frontal view... u see in many of the sample images the faces were exremely tilted and in most of them they were shadowed

  • What argument? Everything I stated was factual despite Blu-rays victory. I didn't make anything up, read my comment again.

  • And here we are four months later, the real winner of this argument is now CSplayahata.

  • HD DVD does have more features that's true but many were just lame. However transformers will have you disagree that Blu-rays extra space is unnecessary. If you recall the HD DVD version of transformers didn't have lossless audio due to space constraints. They chose extra content over lossless audio. The coming Blu-ray version has lossless audio and all extra content.

so that point has already been defeated.

  • Oh please. I have a library of regular DVD's and never scratched one so bad it couldn't be played so the same goes for HD-DVD. Blue-ray holds more data (which they have yet to need) and HD-DVD has more interactive features on it's movies (look at 300 on both formats to see what I mean). Other than that the picture quality and sound are the same.

  • blu-ray is better than HD-DVD the disk protection in the BLu-RAy is better than an HD-DVD. Also PS3 is pussing the sales

  • I think you need to run some more test. If it is doing some face detection, it is probably doing something pretty simple. Try putting a black and white image and see if it still holds up? Possiblity is that the PS3 is doing some simple skin color segmentation....
