there are 4 depression sensors (switches) total in the audio jack port. one of these 4 switches is stuck. there are 2 sets at different depths. the shallow set has 3 sensors (left, top, and right). the deepest set has only 1 (on the right). poke them until they come loose. hope this helps someone.

I've got the same problem. But a toothpick isn't doing the job. Do apple include a free packet of toothpicks with every macbook?

@chillaxed007 obviously you didnt have the same problem as him. im not an idiot, i know to check system pref. as for this paper clip BS, i think ill give it a week to fix itself before i resort to that

the same exact thing is happening to me with my 13' macbook pro, but i DO NOT HAVE A RED LIGHT in my headphone jack. can anybody help??
-
yes that worked. I inserted a small screwdriver instead of the toothpick. thanks

I found a video that fixed it. All you have to do is on your finder on the top click on go, then utilities, scroll down to Audio MIDI setup. click it..... there should be a box checked that makes it mute so unclick it and scroll the volume up there....hope this worked.....................jus
t in case you don't want to damage your laptop poking it with a toothpick -
you stick a tooth pick inside of that port until the speakers on make sure you have anything that requires sound.

oh the red light issue. i just got it last week. the solution is quite simple, just use a toothpick and insert to the speaker slot and try to switch the red light off.

A paperclip fixed it for me.

something like that happens when there is something else going on like a program that the computer can't handle. I had a problem like this, the program got shut down and the speakers worked again. Always check to make sure all your programs are responsive, or you may need to shut down the computer

In my case, restarting the computer did nothing. Apparently there is a sensor to see wether there is no plug or if there is an optical connector, since those will not start electrical currents like normal stuff would. The sensor got stuck, so that when there were no headphones plugged in, the computer thought I was trying to use an optical connection - which would fail, then the computer would give me that "NO" sign whenever I would try to change the volume level.

This was a Hardware issue, which seemed to resolve itself.
