Was this a sister ship to the Carpathia? She looks alot like her.

Sleeping sun, the perfect song for this... I lived there in St Nazaire, just in front of the "Lancastria" beacon, up to the memory stele.
I will never forget what happened...

She was taking part in Operation: Ariel, the evacuation of all Allied Nationals and Military personel from Western France following the collapse of the French military. As a result the passengers were crammed into every avalable space.

@Tundraboy05 her capacity was only 2500...but the loaded her with refugees....much like the CAP ARCONA...which was overloaded with app 5000 prisoners

Lovely tribute. I lost my grandfather at the sinking of the Lancastria. 70 years ago next year. Lest we forget....

This is the biggest marine tragedy. Between 4000 and 9000 people died on 17 June 1940. More than the famous Titanic ! We never talked about this tragedy since 1940. It's only today that we begin to talk about. What a shame !
