Linux vs Windows, Free of Microsoft, Why I Switched to Linux

I am tired of Microsoft charging me to use programs my computer is designed to use. Why am I paying to write? Text files take up the least amount of space, yet Microsoft charges an arm and a leg for typing a research paper.
I paid for the computer, and for the internet service, and I refuse to pay annually to keep using the original programs I paid for when I bought the computer.
With a Linux OS, I am able to use OpenOffice.org a free and legitimate linux office program I have been using since 2006/7.
