In this tutorial we will learn how to create a book with Adboe InDesign CS5. We will divide a existing Document into several Chapters and Synchronise them. We also talk about Headline numbering, Cross-references, Table of COntents, and exporting your book as an PDF for print or online publication.

It's recommended to start writing your master or bachelor thesis already as a book, if you know you will need a lot of pages. Don't worry, once you have set up your book, you can work with InDesign as you are used from single documents.

  • Hello nice tutorial :) i have a project coming up around 100 pages prospectus for university. I wonder how do you do the front and back cover so that when it goes to print it bounds together? do you design both (front and back) on a spread? or do you design each cover on separate page? thanks!

  • @PDemouwarrior Hey, that's a great idea for another tutorial! = ) It kind of depends on the requirements of the company printing your work. I would create a new InDeisgn document (with facing pages). In the pages pannel *right klick* and deactivate "Allow Document Pages to Shuffle". Now you can stich pages together and change the page sizes (for the back bone of a book for example). You might be required to hand in back and front cover on one single page, work with guides+page size in this case.

  • @PDemouwarrior (part 2 of answer) The key thing is to talk with the printing company. They will be happy to give you the right dimensions, information about the way they print the cover. And also make sure to ask them about color profiles etc, so your work on your PC screen will look the same in print = ) I will prepare a tutorial on cover printing / layout, thank you for the suggestion.

  • This is just fantastic, so very helpful! Thank you SO MUCH for making it. I am going to start from the beginning of your series now :) Thank you, thank you!

  • @CrazyShortcutQuilts Thank you = ) I'm happy you find my videos useful. Let me know if you have any questions or need help at some point.
