Pedro dos Santos, a farm laborer tricked into slave labor by a Gato (agent for wealthy land owners), introduces himself, and begins his tale of degradation, hunger, sickness, and escape. He has walked many miles to seek justice for himself, and the workers he left behind. By word of mouth, he has found The Center for the Defense of Life and Human Rights in Açailandia, where he finds refuge, and allies in his search for justice.
