Ontario Canada:

Spring 2011 Update: I've seen Coony a few times in the area. On one occasion I called his name. He stopped and looked at me, clearly recognized me, then ran off as if to say "I'm good, see ya!"

Fall Update: Through the summer Coony came and went as he pleased and got very fat. By late Oct. he was sleeping more and eating less. In mid November he wandered away and hasn't been seen since. We have several people in the area watching for any road kill, and so far there have been none. Since he is a city raccoon there are very few predators, so he is most likely curled up in a den somewhere, ready to ride out the winter.

A friend was driving on a busy road when she came upon a baby raccoon. His mother had been hit and killed by a car and he didn't know better than to stay on the road.

The baby was too young to survive on its own and still needed milk. She is caring for him until he is old enough to wean, and will then reintegrate him into the wild. It is illegal here to keep native species like raccoons as pets, but the rescue center she contacted could not take him yet and so she is caring for him until they can.

  • That is one SERIOUSLY cute little ratbag, I can see your going to have to lock up a lot of things around your house!

  • @1BustedMyth I will be the first to say that wild animals, including racoons, DO NOT MAKE GOOD PETS. Racoons are smart, curious, have hands like monkeys and get into EVERYTHING.

This little guy was just with us long enough to be strong and independent, then he moved back out into the wild/city where he was born.

  • aww Heather....he's the cutest little devil/angel/devil....you better hope he doesnt bond with you and learn how to say mama. its sweet of you to do this for him darlin....most people sadly would have left him laying there.....you got a banana up against the wall under your bed......he sure can put away some milk.....what a sweety he is.....((huggs/love))

  • @777Marlene Rather than expecting him to suck on a bottle, I'm feeding him with a 30cc/30ml (1 oz) syringe with a nipple on the end. This is better for animals that are initially dehydrated or don’t take quickly to a bottle. He drank the first 30ml in about 40 seconds, then went back for another 10ml.

Because raccoons are nocturnal by nature, he wants to play and eat at night, then lazes around all day.

  • @Heather1415, LOL!

I have a lot to do with raising wildlife as well, Possums are some what similar here, very clever, very strong and get into anything, I prefer to have friendly wild animals then pet animals, just love to release!

  • Poor thing. It's the good Samaritans like you that make a difference. Good luck!

  • nice racoon

  • that is about the sweetest thing I have ever seen! And a sad story. But funny that we all have our stories, other species too! Thanks heather
