CS Mackay-Bennett

The CS Mackay-Bennett was a cable repair ship registered in London, England, owned by the Commercial Cable Company. The men who served aboard her pronounced the name "Macky-Bennett." She had a long career fixing undersea cables in the North Atlantic. Although mainly based out of Halifax, Nova Scotia, she was also often used for operations on the European side of the Atlantic. Her European home port was Plymouth, England.

She became famous when, in April 1912, she was contracted by the White Star Line to carry out the difficult task of recovering the bodies left floating in the North Atlantic after the Titanic disaster. Mackay-Bennett found 306 of the 1517 Titanic victims more than any other ship (328 would eventually be recovered in total).

The Canadian author Thomas Raddall worked as wireless operator aboard Mackay-Bennett and based some short stories on his experiences aboard.

The Mackay-Bennett was retired in May 1922 to the waters of Plymouth Harbour to be used as a storage hulk. During The Blitz on England, she was sunk during a German attack, but later refloated. She was finally scrapped in 1963

  • ....wow....thts all i have to say

    WOW

  • this song takes me back to my childhood cause my mom used to have this tape and we would listen to this on any road trips, memories memories

  • That's because she came to your attn after her mainstream success and her voice while still beautiful had matured from this album and her 2 previous and she sings mainly falsetto now. Alison recorded her first album at 15 when her voice was the most unique i've ever heard... very strong and haunting. She's not the first singer that started young and their vocal style completely change as they aged but she's been able 2 with alot of class and still find music that suits her style.

  • No, Steel Rails is the 8th song on her 3rd Album called "I've got that old feeling" written by Sidney Cox. It's Over is the 6th song on that same album. While it was her first album to break into the circles of country music her two previous were bluegrass sensations and are unbelievable. Sweet lady, beautiful voice, great song.... thanks for posting w/ Titanic.

  • this is off her first album, steel rails. definitely allison

  • But it is Alison Krauss. I know her voice anywhere.

  • Well this is a song i have been looking for from Alison for a very long time. I used to listen to this song with my daughter when she was born, and my dad used to rock her in his arms. I sang along with this song so many times, and YES IT IS ALISON KRAUSS. there is no denying that wonderful vocalization. i have some of her earliest music, and i know her voice anywhere, even when she started singing with others, shanendoah, vince gill, robert plant, john waite, kenny rogers. i know her anywhere..

  • This does'nt sound like Alison Krauss to me. Hmm?
