The wood chip dryer was designed and built for grad students to perform research to see whether it makes any sense to dry wood chips before using as fuel. In other words what is the cost benefit ratio.

  • Grad students did this? What an utterly stupid waste of time. The "the cost benefit ratio" could have been calculated on paper, but if it found that dried chips WERE more efficient, surely there are 1000 times more efficient methods of drying them. One is suggested here. Another would be the exhaust from... a chip burner! You basically learned nothing from this entire exercise. And I would have expected high school students to be capable of figuring that out.

  • @callmeshane303

It's actually even dumber when you consider that all of this can be worked out on a piece of paper with a pencil.

  • What a DUMB way to do it......what is wrong with painting some sheet metal black and then using that to heat air..... to dry the chips...

    ~1Kw a meter squared......

Bottom feed hopper, extractor fan at the top - sucking the hot air in the bottom and the humidified air out the top.

  • So.. Does it make sense to dry the chips?

  • Hmmm i would wonder if the potential emergey in the wood chip would deliver enough energy to make these drying-system sensful.

  • You can pick up a gear motor like that from Grainger, McMaster-Carr, or any decent industrial supply company.

  • its seems that hot air go through wood chips dirctly without heat exchanger so the humidity go out through the chimney output

  • Must be nice to have all that "college $"! I bet there's a grand or more in materials there. But please respond..What were the results?

  • Nice gear reducer.. Ain't cheap.

  • what was the result and were did u getthat motor
