What is the music that was used here? I'm familiar with Miklos Rozsa's great score, and the Carl Davis score for the restored Niblo version, also the Sewart Copeland score for Ben-Hur Live, and I know of Hossein's score. Then there's the Axt and Mendoza, and I know there was an 1899 theatre score, but this music here is very fine. It sounds turn of the Century, sometimes wifh an almost Vaughan-Williams feel, sometimes 1930s Italian. What is it?
The Ur-director here could only position his fixed camera at medium-distance; he apparently didn't know how to do close-ups, which were known at the time, of course (one closes "The Great Train Robbery").
The tracking shot was beyond his capabilities here, as well. The horses (all three teams!) just rush by. Pretty short race!
"Ben-Hur" was a very successful novel and stage production; much of the audience for this brief screen treatment would have already been familiar with the story.
the quality and picture are terrible, but this was at the very, very, very beginning of cinema, so it's worth viewing. The 1925 silent version and the even more popular 1959 film are so much better.
