    it may seem that way, but during the 1960's and actually before that, these people in the mental institutions were deemed different and abnormal and were contained in these places. They weren't treated with respect because the knowledge of how to treat their 'illness' was so futile. It wasn't painless, it was numbing torture

    this movie was not meant to be a great ad campaign for the mental health community apparently KEN Kesey WHO wrote the original story said he had experiences with people in the mental health industry and was apparently appalled by what he saw!! and this movie was a reflection of that!!

    It's commonly used to treat severe depression and it does help. This is of course assuming that the doctors actually give a damn about the patient.

    I've also been told/read that it's a last resort and the patient must consent to it, most of the time.
