My Husband and I were there and we loved it. It may or may not be the exact point of the center of the world but we had fun anyway. Loved the food and the people.

He is absotutely right...it is not the equator...I have an ecuadorian friend and he said that they built that monrntal there do to the fact the ppl started to faint (due to the altitude) and fell down to a hole that is neverending! Back then they didn't know what caused by of course we now know it is because of the altitude...you may only be a university student to get the real tour of the exact equator line...ask for more info...take care

la mision geodesica francesa reconocio ese punto como la mitad del mundo por eso fue construido, The french scientifics decided that was the place and the monument was built, complain to the dead french scientifics then, we just built it
what an idiot, the monument is 40 feet or 100 feet away, they measured with hands and rulers back then, the french did it more then hundred years ago, you should be happy that you were in the middle of the world anyway

Thanks for the insult! The monument is quite a lot more than 100 feet away. I do appreciate the original surveyors feat, but it does take some political aplomb to build a giant permenant monument with a 4-inch wide line when your surveyors knew the margin of error was in the hundreds of yards. It's amusing, fun, and wondrous to have a hand-held device that lets you get it within 30 feet with no effort.

I have a GPS in my car but for some reason marks the streets to me with 30 feet of anticipation, So Don't trust at All on this instruments ok.!!!!!

At best, GPS has a 30-foot margin of error, but the supposed equator marked by the monument is hundreds of feet off. It's actually pretty amazing for the equipment available a hundred years ago, but GPS gets you a lot closer to the real line.
