Update 2009-06-25: HyraTech no longer carries the part, so the following may help:

http://store.richspsxparts.com/pl3paac.html (they carried the KEM-400AAA deck and the KES-400A laser unit, apparently based in the USA)

Update 2008-12-04: I got it in one! The laser unit was indeed the culprit! I replaced it and it works fine now.

The laser unit in my PS3 just quit working the other day. I somehow lost my paperwork, so I bought a new PS3 and will fix the old one to sell. I have replacement parts coming from an outfit in Elmhurtst, NY (HyraTech).

Without going into detail here, I will say that Sony cheaped out on the wrong part in the PS3!

Update 2008-11-25: In my haste, I totally forgot how these things work! The light starts at the laser, goes through the optics and prism, out the objective lens. It then has to COME BACK into the laser unit to be picked up. Those side optics and electronics probably do this (via prisms in the return path). See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1P2kfWx7tM for the complete optical path.

  • hey junker15 i just installed my new laser today but it will only read blu ray and not dvd (ps2) do you no whats wrong?

  • @PeronMiles I'd check the connections again, and possibly try to read other DVDs (such as a DVD movie that you know works elsewhere). If the connections are OK and the PS3 fails to read DVDs after that, you should get the laser exchanged.

  • @junker15 well i exchanged with another and its still doing the same thing. DX what else could be the problem??

  • @PeronMiles If you do a clear disc check and see the red laser lighting up, it might be that you have to go into the Recovery Menu and perform the "Restore file system" and "Repair database" options. These won't destroy data on the hard drive, but be sure to have a backup just in case.

  • LOL UR PISSED

  • @christheman97 Yeah... I mean, I couldn't play Little Big Planet! Actually, I was mostly amazed the thing just quit on me.
