DVD available from Amazon, 5th Nov 2007.

It's basically an art film exploring the relationship between people, time and space. The building is old and full of history, as are Japanese martial arts. The film illustrates the idea of process and endurance which evoke notions of quality and mastery. The idea is to reveal the quintessential nature of aikido rather than actual techniques.

  • This is simply not aikido.

  • I think you should see the whole film rather than comment on a trailer.

In the Shodokan system we have a structured system of basic practice exercises, the first ones are performed without a partner but by the whole class simultaniously.

But why can you not practice weapons by one's self? Just bokken cuts to strengthen wrists and relax sholders? Or practive the jo kata by ones self. That one i like for movement and fitness.

  • wow google 'interlacing' please

  • consider it done

  • shotokan aikido is NOT aikido , why do they call it ai-ki-do

if it had the DO of Osensei it would not be any competition..

  • true, "shotokan", is not the aikido. It's not my typo up in the title. This competition thing gets a little tired.

  • I believe that these individual movements were developed by Tomiki while he was in a prison in Siberia after WWII. It's hard to practice the essence of Aikido without a partner! As a result, he developed series of movements to help him stay sharp and work on the basics. This won't replace working with a partner, but it CAN complement it!

  • Well, ladies and gents with all respect to everyone in the forum. I am from Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan and the moves can be identifed with some of our bunkai and kobudo. However, the one comment concerning making a traditional art into a "Sport Art" aggrevates me to the max! I have never seen Aikido done like this before, just saying..Oss

  • I enjoyed this. I thought it was well done. Thank you and I wish you continued enjoyment and progress on your Budo path.

  • Very nice!

  • @Aur0rah I agree with you. This is not Aikido. I hate it when they turn an MA into a sport just ruin the true art.

  • Aikido simply means "the Way of harmonious spirit." So, yeah. I see the tenkan movement and all that but.... I just gotta say..... *Sigh.....Boring film. I know it's just a trailer, but...Looks boring. I study Aikido and It's not this style, but it's all good. Shihan Steven Seagal Sensei would tell anyone who asks simply that he practices and teaches aikido...that, "Aikido is aikido."

  • hi, im interested in learning aikido. but im finding it hard to identify different types of aikido and what to expect from them. is is as varied as the different styles of Karate (shotokan, okinawan, kyokushin, kenpo) or is it pretty much like Judo where it's just one main style - Kodokan; but some people name their aikido differently based on their ryu, as with the old jujitsu schools? so far, ive heard of daito ryu aikido and just recently discovered Shodokan...

  • well, im aikidoka, but good old aikikai.

i have to say these its very diferent to the aikido i know, personaly i dont like it, i dont see here what i was looking for in aikido when i started.

but it is aikido. just whant to say to the ppl who say these its not aikido, well, its prety aiki to me, a diferent path, but there must be a path, remember aikido its a complex word not just a random martial art name that sounds cool and these martial art its the evidence.

  • Great!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great clip, thanks for uploading it. I'm definitely interested in buying the dvd after seeing this.
